Jesus has assured us that he is with us to the very end of the age. Throughout the day, we need to hear this reassurance. We need to allow ourselves to hear him say: “I am with you, I am with you, I am with you.”. It is this voice that builds up our inner strength. Each day presents its own challenges and its own joys. His voice provides comfort and guidance when we face fears and insecurities. His reassurance allows us to enjoy the in-between moments with lightness of heart because we trust he is there with us, we are in his care, we have the Good Shepard who will never leave us nor forsake us.

Father God, you are with me, you are with me, you are with me. Be my inner strength, my rock and my joy, May your reassuring voice be louder and drown out all the other voices that compete to grab my attention.

Today and tomorrow

29 October 2014We spend a lot of time planning and thinking about the future. It’s a natural impulse and even considered to be the reason why some great achievements have been made. But with all the excessive and impulsive planning – we wonder why life is so difficult and so unfair. We wonder why it takes so long to get to where we want to be. We get overwhelmed with the decisions we have to make because there are so many choices. This all wearies the body and soul. Even though i like to plan so much, i realise that the more i think and try to play out the future in my mind, the more i get myself stuck in routine and monotony. I overlook the bigger and more important moment by moment decisions i need to make now because i am too stuck on decisions i may or may not have to make in the future. Jesus said “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.But i believe Jesus was also referring to focusing on today – the day we have been given – this very moment. Trusting that God is already in tomorrow and he has already figured that out for us as well. Instead, i just need to focus on being who i am called to be today. So that i can pour myself into today. And perhaps, today won’t be so bad after all. Perhaps i will even have the courage to take bolder decisions as i trust in God.
Lord, how easy my mind slips into “tomorrow” mode! Turn my focus back on today. Turn my mind to address today with the confidence that you are also addressing tomorrow. I take care of today, and you take care of tomorrow.

There are opportunities for miracles everyday. Miracles range from supernatural occurrences to simply wonderful experiences. Some would say that every waking moment for each of us is a miracle in motion. Jesus performed many miracles during his time of ministry. The most important one being his resurrection and conquering of death.

In John 11:25. Jesus said  “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”.
Of all the miracles that Jesus did, this one remains the most beautiful and is on-going, every day. Every day, there is an opportunity for someone to witness, for someone to see and hear, to believe, and to live, even though they die. We sometimes chase after signs and wonders – but the grandest miracle sometimes happens in the most quiet of ways. Just because we don’t see it now doesn’t mean it hasn’t already happened.

Lord Jesus, may i bear witness of your life, may i bear witness of your hope. May i bear witness of the eternal life that i will live in you, as i believe and as i put my trust in you. Keep me abiding in you, and may i be the aroma of Christ. Forgive me for my inadequacies and strengthen my resolve to be a miracle for others.

I believe prayer opens our spiritual eyes and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. We often pray because we need or want something – but prayer can be for thanksgiving and for focusing our minds on God. It is the blocking out of all other distractions and welcoming the Lord into our thoughts. Someone said today, it is asking for God’s heart to be our heart and for his desires to excite us.

The devil will use all ways and means to distract us away from prayer because it can be one of the most powerful weapons we have as believers. In prayer scripture can come to mind to pierce the lies of the devil, peace can transcend chaos, fear is dissipated and the comfort of God can wrap around us.

Lord, may my prayer time with you be filled with the Holy Spirit. May you bring to mind your word of truth, your wisdom and your assurance. May i tackle difficulties with prayer, may i give thanks in prayer, may i present needs and desires in prayer, may i draw near to you in prayer. May this nearness to you be my strength and song.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.James 4:1

It is true that there are passions at war within us. Everyday we fight the urge and temptations of the world’s passions. The pride of life, the wealth and pleasures of the world. All these allure us and create the passions and actions identified in James.

But God promised a new heart and a new person when we received Jesus into our lives. We are transformed and being sanctified. Part of this process requires the transforming and sanctification of our worldly passions. May God replace these worldly passions with a passion for him and his kingdom. May we willingly lay down our worldly passions before the Lord.

Lord Jesus, you were tempted as i am, yet you rebuked the devil and stood firm in the Lord. May i do the same and may i lay down worldly lusts and passions that weigh me down. May your Holy Spirit expose these vain passions and may i confess this before you. Replace these worldly passions with a passion for you and your glory.

Many people, including myself, are living on “survival” mode throughout our daily lives. The moment we wake up, we need to rush to get to work on time, then we need to fight through the demands and challenges at work, after work we might come back home to children, housework, paying the bills, making applications for this and that – and on top of it all, finding time to exercise to keep fit! We rush things, we hurry. Yet the saying is true “more haste, less speed”.

But Jesus was never in a hurry. Jesus never seemed to rush things. There was an order, a purpose, a falling into place of events and things. Jesus seemed to know exactly what to do at exactly the right time. Of course, he was God, but he also asked us to follow him. He also promised us his peace and the Holy Spirit to guide us in all truth and righteousness. When we rush and hurry, we might miss the rhythm of God’s orchestrated purpose for our lives. We might fail to realise that in fact, life doesn’t need to be rushed and hurried if only we abide and trust in his provision and care. Living in the Spirit and walking by the Spirit means we can be free from this rush and hurry – we can break away from “survival” mode.

Lord God, may i be aware of your provision, your care and the orchestration of your plan in my life. May i not be rushed, hurried or be stooped in “survival” mode that i miss the peace of simply walking in your Spirit. May i walk in the power of Christ.

My mind can zoom frantically here and there in the day – trying to coordinate and make the best use of time. There are days when it feels like there simply isn’t enough time to do everything.

But if i just “slow down” a little and take a pause to acknowledge that God is in the midst of my busyness – i can start to receive his calming spirit. I start to realise that God is able to do far more when i “slow-down” and acknowledge him, then when i am in frantic mode.

Lord of heaven and earth. You surpass time and space and i thank you for calming me when i get frantic with the “to-dos” each day. Lord i need your peace of mind and for you to calm my heart. You keep me in perfect peace.

It is pleasing to God when we spend time with him. Just as a father loves time spent with his children, our Heavenly Father also enjoys our time with him. Each day there are scrabbling thoughts about what we need to do, tasks to complete, things to check, emails to reply and places to go. There is an urge to get right into the action of these things so that we can be diligent in accomplishing all that the day has in store for us. It can be hard to shake off this urge to hit the ground running.

But if we believe that God has made each day and given it to us as a gift, then surely, he has also intended that each day should be spent meaningfully with him. It’s not only about carving out a few minutes of quiet time each day. It’s also about experiencing his presence in the midst of our busy schedules.

Holy Spirit, may you enable me to experience the presence of God in the midst of the day’s activities. May your presence permeate each day. Help me to see your hand in everything i do. Thank you for creating today for me. May i experience your love and care throughout the day.

Before starting the day

22 October 2014

Aligning ourselves with God in our spirit is an on-going challenge for every Christian. When we are put in different circumstances, we tend to align ourselves to best adapt to those circumstances. There comes a time when that easily shifts our focus and God is displaced by other distractions.

Seeking God at the start of the day is probably one of the most effective ways to begin on the right foot. Just like a good breakfast, it keeps us running healthily spiritually throughout the day. I always find that skipping a good breakfast compromises my energy and appetite for the rest of the day. I’m more prone to snacking and eating at an odd times and everything seems out of balance. But a good breakfast always pays off. Just like a good quiet time with God first thing in the morning always pays off.

Lord, i pray that i can commit each morning in quietness with your Spirit. May i receive from you each morning, my strength, my marching orders and my resolve to align myself to you. Help me get right with you before i start the day. May you help me in this discipline.
