“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
When we are rich there is a tendency to rely on money to solve a lot of our “problems”. Money can do a lot of things and when it becomes a tool to get what we want, we start relying on it more and more and less on God.
Jesus said that blessed are the poor in spirit – referring to those who recognize their spiritual emptiness and poverty or those who are yearning to be filled by the goodness of God.
It’s very hard to be spiritually hungry and humble (poor in spirit) because riches and material comfort provide a physical level of comfort that easily translates into spiritual sufficiency. But money can only go so far, whereas those who depend on God will never be disappointed and will be given entry into the kingdom that will last forever.
Father Lord, i pray that physical and material comfort will never take away a spiritual hunger for You and what you stand for.
