The rest to God

1 June 2014

Unless the LORD builds a house,
the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the LORD protects a city,
guarding it with sentries will do no good.
It is useless for you to work so hard
from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Many of us, including myself work very hard to try to secure a good future. Be it working hard at our jobs or pursuing our goals and dreams, we all want to build something out of our lives.

Our lives are not only lived to ourselves but are also lived to God. And God is also the only person who determines our success or failure. Yet it is still difficult to live this out in everyday life. To an extent we must exert our own will and effort into our daily lives, but I have always been told, we leave the rest to God. Once I leave the comfort and peace of believing God will take care of the results, I place myself on shaky ground. In truth, we can only offer our best to God and that is our part done. The rest is up to God and how He determines. Not always will we have the results we desired, but peace isn’t about getting what we desire, it’s about knowing we’ve given our very best to God and that should buy us peace that will endure and which is far more resilient than the rewards we otherwise seek from the world through our own efforts.

Lord God, may I seek to attain that peace which tells me, “Good and faithful servant” and may the words, “With you, I am well pleased” be sufficient reward and praise that will bring lasting joy and strength to my heart. Help me not to seek for this anywhere else or let anything else substitute the joy of working for The Lord.
