I have judged Christians and Christian ministry before. I would say or think that it was all a show, had ulterior motives, or worse, demonic.
But today and perhaps for some time, i have to admit that i am missing the bigger picture when i judge other Christian work or ministry. Sure, there are some cheats out there and Jesus had warned many times in the bible to watch out for them. But I think where i get too far, is when i neglect to balance the need for prudence and discernment, with the need to have a heart of unity within the Church.
In fact, the truth of God has been most suppressed and twisted by two main evil forces – firstly by the religious spirit – being to show off or hold up a “better-than-all-the-rest” image, secondly, by the division within the Church. I would say though, that the first is similar to the second evil, in that it only goes to separate people rather than unite people.
Jesus came to bring faith to everyone and even the gentiles.
Galatians 3:27-28:“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”
Not to put down the many great leaders of faith of today and before, but i feel that Christians can sometimes be the cause of division within the Church. The Church as you and i know, is not made up of separate congregations, but is one body in Christ. But i believe this body is also lifted up and supported by pillars of faith – the apostles teachings in the New Testament and their work done in the early church, the pastors and Christian leaders of before and now – Christ of course being the foundation.
I imagine the Church consisting of a flat layer of many Christians all being built upon the foundation of Jesus, but as the Church needs to be a light to the world, this layer of Christians needs to be lifted up high so that the light can shine further. Whenever a pillar (being a group of Christians or a particular leadership within the Church) is only interested in protecting its own section or congregation, the bigger picture is not in mind and as a whole, the Church might suffer.
This is not to say that all churches need to be exactly the same. No. Like how Jesus described it, the body is also made out of different parts, but the differences are there because each part is supporting an important function of the whole body of Christ.
A heart of unity is important to develop in every Christian’s attitude. Without unity, the enemy easily penetrates and separates. If you’ve ever seen a wildlife documentary of how the predator hunts it’s prey – you will notice that they go in and diffuse a herd of prey first, and when unity is broken, the predator attacks the weakest one as its meal.
Father, I pray for a heart of unity and discernment as are both needed in the Christian life, the goal being to always further your Kingdom and not my own interests.
