Mind of praise and worship

1 May 2014

In many places in the New Testament, Jesus warns about being weighed down by the cares and worries of this life.

Mark 4:18-19: “The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.”

Luke 21:34: “”Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.

Matthew 6:33-34:”But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

In many ways Jesus is asking us not to worry because He cares for us and is sovereign, but Jesus is also warning us about allowing too much of the cares in this life take up our minds. To the extent we cannot think about God or put Him as a priority or as our lasting joy and satisfaction – we know something else is taking the place of God.

A pastor once said, there is one statistic on earth which is 1 out of 1 – 100% and that is death. Death comes to all eventually and we can all count on it happening. But death isn’t the end of all life because our souls continue to live on. I believe though that when our minds and cares are so ingrained to life on earth, we cannot actually expect to receive the Kingdom of God. In our death we will die to the earth and the cares of this life – but Jesus is asking us to die to Him.

Jesus told us to be prepared and stay alert – but what does that mean? Perhaps He meant to be prepared both in our body, heart and mind to receive and enter the Kingdom of God. We cannot enter without preparing all of our body (in holy living), heart (in goodness and truth) and mind (in praise and worship to God). A mind set full with the cares of this life cannot be a mind of praise and worship. I am guilty of this over and over again.

But with the cleansing power and regeneration of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I am made new daily and i have hope.

Father, forgive me for allowing the cares of this life to weigh me down to the extent i cannot find space in my mind or heart or body to praise you. Cleanse my thoughts and lift me out of the dark pattern of thinking and worrying about my life here. Let me see and know that i am secure in You and may i take the time to see beyond my present anxieties and find a life of abundance by keeping a mind of praise and worship daily. I love you Lord.
