It dawned on me today that God has rarely written any part of the bible (other than perhaps the ten commandments which were inscribed by God on tablets of stone) but has left scripture to be completely authored by human agents. Whilst this may be used to attack the authenticity of the Word of God, we know that each and every word in scripture has been inspired by God. And so it is written:“All scripture is God-breathed…”.
But what really fascinates me is that God could easily have written the bible himself. For example, when Jesus was on earth, he could have devoted some time to write instructions to us and leave a complete piece of scripture which was directly from his hand. Yet none of this was done. We are only given accounts by Jesus’ disciples who wrote the entire New Testament.
What i am seeing is that God has chosen intentionally to use human agents to carry out his purposes and truth on earth. We are witnesses of God and it is entirely dependent on us to partner with God in order to bring His life and glory onto earth. Not that God is powerless without us, but that He chooses for our benefit i believe, to let us be a central part of His divine plan. It’s as the scripture goes:
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 3.
And so much responsibility has been given to us to be true witnesses for Christ. We bear His name and most of all, toward those who do not know Jesus, we are the reputation of his name. When people hear about Jesus, they have no one else as a reference point except us as his disciples.
God has given us the privilege to be His witness and to carry His name. In the past, God even gave us His truth through human hands on paper. There is great honor and trust given to us. There is great responsibility that we bear when we choose to live as disciples of Christ.
Lord Jesus, i thank you for the privilege and honor to be called by you as your witness. I am forever indebted to your mercy and grace and i ask that my life hereon is pleasing to you. I know i will make mistakes along the way, but i pray that You help me to correct myself along the way for your name’s sake.
